HAWAII GAS PRICE RANKS 35TH IN NATION

Ranking Indicates that Gas Price Cap is Working

Honolulu.   According to the AAA Daily Fuel Gauge Report for today, September 5, 2005, Hawaii ranks 35th in the nation for the cost of gasoline.

Topping the list is Maryland, with the cost of regular gasoline at $3.26, followed by the District of Columbia at $3.258, Rhode Island at $3.243, New York at $3.237 and Delaware at $3.227.  The price of regular gas in Hawaii, in 35th place, is listed at $3.011.

"For the first time in many years, if not decades, Hawaii's gas prices are tracking lower than other mainland locations," said State Representative Marcus Oshiro, Majority Leader for the House of Representatives.  "This indicates that Hawaii's fair gas price law is working, and other states are now looking at Hawaii's price cap as a model."

Attached is a copy of the AAA Daily Fuel Gauge Report ranking and a chart showing Hawaii's gas prices in comparison to the national averages.  The chart shows Hawaii's gas prices 20 to 40 cents higher than the national average until September 1, the effective date of the price cap.  At that point in time, Hawaii's gas prices mirrored the national average and then dropped significantly below as of today.
